(Purist are willing to suffer. I once owned a hardwired system: all patch cords and speaker leads were directly soldered to their connections; in the case of the speaker cables, they were soldered directly to the output transistors and power supply ground. Yes, it sounded much better. No, it was not at all convenient.) If I were to build this preamp today, I would probably use a hybrid circuit or two gain stages cascaded to get as much gain into the first stage, as gain here unloads the need for gain

later. Second, I would include provisions to allow source switching and still maintain the 500 Hz crossover. Finally, I would play with using the 2122 Hz pole as a tone control by shifting the corner frequency higher and lower.
